In Plain Sight

Some people read small signs and turn them into something a worried person can use. They are not fortune-telling. A shake in the voice, a change in the weather, a look around the room get gathered, then given back as a picture that sticks. You'd notice this in the one whose answer is a short story people still repeat years later.

The Pattern at Work

A woman comes to ask about her son, and what she asks about is whether he should take the job in the city. That is not what she is there for and both of them know it within a minute. The one she has come to see does not say so. She asks about the house, about who is eating there now, about the dog, and notes that the son is mentioned four times and the husband not once. Then she says something short about a river that has changed its course and left a good field on the wrong side, and that the field is still good. It is not advice. The woman goes home with a sentence she will be turning over for a month, and somewhere in that month the thing she actually came about gets said out loud to somebody.

A man who has not slept properly since the accident sits for an hour. He is told nothing at all about sleep. He is asked what the weather has been doing, and about a tree he mentioned in passing, and after a long silence he is given an image about a gate that has to be opened before the animals will come in from the field. He repeats it to his brother that evening, slightly wrong, and it works better wrong than it would have done right, because the version he repeated was one he had already made his own.

Neither conversation contained a recommendation. Both produced a change, because what was handed over was portable, and a piece of advice is not.

What the Examples Show

It gets read as wisdom, or as intuition, or, less kindly, as vagueness dressed up. All three readings miss the same thing, which is that this is a transfer problem rather than a knowing problem.

The first half is ordinary observation carried further than is comfortable: listening past the presented question, noticing what is repeated and what is never mentioned. That is patient work and it is not mysterious.

The second half is the unusual one. Whatever has been understood has to travel home in the head of somebody who is frightened, tired and not going to remember a paragraph. So it gets given as an image, which survives being misremembered, and which can be lived with for a month without requiring agreement.

The refusal to instruct is deliberate. An instruction can be obeyed or rejected, and both of those close the question. An image stays open, and the person does the rest of the work themselves, which is the only way the answer ends up being theirs.

Going Deeper

Every settled community produces somebody people walk a long way to sit with, and the role looks remarkably similar across places that had no contact.

The priestess at Delphi answered in lines that could be turned over for years, and what the institution actually sold was the turning over rather than the answer. Desert hermits gave sayings rather than counsel and kept them short enough to carry. Irish and Scottish tradition had people consulted about weather, cattle and trouble without any clear distinction between the three. Village herbalists across Europe read the person and the household as much as the symptom. The form changes and the method does not, which is the usual sign that the method is answering a real constraint rather than a local custom.

None of it can be checked, and that is where the trouble has always been.

The work is unverifiable in both directions. It cannot be proved to have helped, which leaves it defenceless against dismissal, and it cannot be proved to have been honest, which leaves the role permanently open to anybody who wants authority without accountability. The same technique in bad hands is manipulation, and it looks identical from outside. The practitioner also carries what is brought and cannot pass any of it on, because it arrives in confidence and stays there for the rest of a working life. And people come at the worst hour of their lives with expectations the role cannot meet, so a great deal of the skill goes on declining, gently, to be whatever the visitor has already decided this person is.

The Image

The thing they can carry home.

Not the true answer, which is often too heavy and usually unwelcome. The smaller portable version: an image, a short account of something else, a sentence that will still be there on Thursday.

Anything given to a worried person has to survive the journey home in their head. Most of what gets said to people in trouble does not survive the car park.

Where It Stops

Being sympathetic is not this, and neither is having opinions about people. Plenty of perceptive people read a situation accurately and then hand it over in a form nobody can use.

It goes wrong as never being plain. Some situations want a fact: the lump needs looking at, the money has gone, the man is lying. An image offered there is not wisdom, it is an evasion, and it can cost somebody a year.

It also fails wherever the asker wants authority. There is a demand for someone to say what will happen, and the role attracts exactly that demand. Meeting it is the point where this stops being useful and starts being something else.

Take the plainer explanation first. Anyone whose job is sitting with troubled people learns to speak in pictures, because it works and the training notices. The test is whether it happens unasked, outside any role, with a stranger on a bench.

Where It Pays

Inside a job. Pastoral and chaplaincy work, counselling and therapy of the less procedural kinds, traditional and complementary practice, hospice settings, and any role where people arrive with a question that is standing in for another one. Also supervision, mediation and the human end of medicine, where the diagnosis is the easy half and getting it to live in somebody's head is the hard one.

What is actually being supplied is retention. Almost everything said to frightened people is forgotten within hours, which is why the same advice gets given six times and changes nothing. Something built to be carried is worth more than something built to be correct, because only one of them is still present at the moment the person has to act.

It pays badly wherever an answer has to be recorded and defended, badly under time pressure, and badly in any setting that measures a session by what was covered.

Outside one. Families, neighbours, anybody who comes to the door. The cost worth naming is that once a person is known for this, they are visited, and the visits arrive in crisis and at inconvenient hours. The second is holding what cannot be repeated, for decades, in a small place where everybody knows who came to the door.

Try This

Next time somebody brings you a problem, do not answer it.

Instead, listen for what they mention more than twice and what they never mention at all. Those two things together are usually the real shape of it.

Then say one thing, and make it about something other than their situation: a comparison, something that happened elsewhere, a picture. Two sentences at most, with no recommendation attached.

Then change the subject. Whether they come back to it is the evidence.

The thing they can carry home is a tool, not a self. Pick it up where somebody has to live with a question for a while. Put it down where a plain fact is needed today, because there a picture is a way of not saying it.

If This Isn't You

Most people answer the question they were asked, which is respectful, efficient, and what the majority of askers actually want. Feeling no pull to listen past it is an answer, not a bluntness.

Where To Go Next

Its near-twin — Quiet-Counselor. Both sit with somebody working out what to do. Quiet-Counselor brings nothing of its own and helps the person find their own answer in their own words. This one hands something over — an image that was not theirs — and lets them misremember it usefully.

Its shadow — Evidence Mapper. Evidence Mapper will state only what can be laid out and shown. This one deals almost entirely in what cannot be, and its whole value lives in the part that would not survive being written down.

Most often confused with — Wisdom-Passer. Both answer with a story rather than with advice. Wisdom-Passer's story is a real previous case with a cost attached, aimed at a decision. This one's is an image chosen to be carried, and it does not matter at all whether it happened.
